Technology Pushes New Barriers

Technology trends are the most important thing in the new world of investing in tech, and technology growth is being accelerated by edge computing.

Most of us expect artificial intelligence and cloud computing to continue to dominate headlines around the world, but 2020 could prove to show another technology taking news by storm: edge computing.

Paul Sallomi, the Global Technology, Media, and Telecommunications industry leader of Deloitte, shared his perspective in an recent interview regarding the processing of data locally and the advantages it provides, and how partnerships can play a major role in the acceleration of growth in the technology sector.

The familiarity of cloud computing, including the everything-as-a-service sector, and artificial intelligence may be the most headline-grabbing and popular new technologies, but Paul Sallomi believes now is the right time for companies to begin to seriously explore the advantages of processing data locally; advantages such as reduced latency and lower costs of bandwidth at the edge of their networks. Strategic partnerships will likely be even more essential for technology companies interested in delivering solutions that are drivers of true business outcomes for their customers.

Given the rapid growth of Internet of Things devices and the increased portability of artificial intelligence tools and computing power, edge computing could begin to experience significant growth.

In 2019, companies generated only 10% of their data outside of cloud storage or a data center, but in the next six years this number is expected to reach 75%. In three years, as many as 45% of Internet of Things generated data could be stored, processed, analyzed and acted upon at the edge of networks, largely driven by the applications of Internet of Things devices across many industries, including agriculture, energy, financial services, healthcare, logistics, manufacturing, and retail.

We can expect to see many more portable as well as fixed networks with low-latency, local high capacity processing capabilities embedding analytics and artificial intelligence, transforming the customer experience.

These benefits can extend to autonomous vehicles, distribution facilities, and factories, or to any situation where data may be locally processed instead of delivering it to a cloud storage or data center.
